Post your goals

Duration
It could be done in approximately 30 minutes but to get the most out of it one should set aside at least 60 min. Can also depend on group size.
Where can it be used
Any space where the participants can move around in an enclosed area.
Group size
In theory, the upper size is unlimited. No lower limit in theory, but I think it works best for groups larger than 3 people.
Objective
Allows the teacher to learn the goals that exist in the group as well for individual students and gives him/her a chance to set expectations for the course, additionally it gives the teacher a hook for reflection at the end of the course; “did we meet the expectations?”. It gives the group a chance to interact and connect on physical and mental levels as well as establishing what common goals exist in the group.

When to use it

It’s used at the forming of the group, for the reasons stated above and can be reflected upon at the end.

Step-by-step guide

1. Every member is given post-it notes and pens.
2. They write down their goals with the course, one goal per note. Also one note with their name.
3. Every member fastens their post-it notes on the front of their body
4. The group walks around in the room, reading each other's notes. When a member sees a note with a goal they share, they take it and put it on themselves and then continue.
5. You’re allowed to grab as many notes as you want during the exercise but should only grab one per encounter.
6. After a set time, the exercise ends.
7. The mentor collects all the notes and reads through them all in front of the group; the purpose here is to set expectations and discuss goals.

Note that a member can take any note at any point, they don’t have to have written it down themselves. So it’s also a chance to discover new goals for themselves.

Materials needed

Post-it notes and pens.

Tips for facilitators

It’s possible to observe how the group behaves together. Most attention should be directed towards the goals and in case there are unrealistic, or otherwise hard to attain goals.

Possible variations

I believe it can be used at the formation of most groups.
